BECU Opens New Financial Center in Tacoma
A new location expands financial services for members in Pierce County and increases opportunities for BECU to support the community.
Accessing expanded financial services just got more convenient for many BECU members in Pierce County. A new location in Tacoma will save many members who need to access teller services from making a trip across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to get to Gig Harbor, or battling heavy traffic to get to Tukwila.
"We're excited about the opportunity this location gives us to better serve our 186,000 — and growing — members in the area for years to come," said BECU President and CEO Beverly Anderson.
The new 7,500-square-foot location near the Tacoma Central shopping area is among the largest in BECU's network and offers expanded services with tellers onsite. Members can cash checks, get cash advances, use drive-up ATM services and more. Members will also have space to access financial consultants via Video Banking.
Additionally, the Pierce County Financial Center has space to offer financial health seminars and community events.
Transforming the Site
The first time Anderson drove by the site of what would become the new financial center, it required some imagination for her to envision what it could become. BECU's Retail Market Expansion team — the division tasked with identifying new locations to serve credit union members — was confident in the vision and worked diligently for more than two years to bring the new location to life.
"Now this is one of the most beautiful locations in our system," Anderson said, referencing BECU's more than 60 financial centers in operation.
Members might recognize some of the staff because BECU has assembled a seasoned team, with many coming from nearby locations.
"The BECU Pierce County leadership team has a combined 50 years of BECU experience, so while we're new to this location, we're certainly not new to BECU," said branch manager BJ Hunsicker. "We look forward to leveraging the relationships we've built together to make a difference in this community."
Serving the Community
While this specific location is new for BECU, the credit union has long been part of the Pierce County community, opening its first Tacoma location in 2004. In that time, BECU has deepened its partnerships with community organizations and nonprofits to provide support beyond financial services.
In recent years, the credit union has sponsored efforts by Pierce County nonprofits that focused on important issues such as housing stability, access to education and economic development.
In 2024, BECU gave $9.2 million to hundreds of nonprofits focused on empowering financial well-being in the Pacific Northwest and beyond, including nearly 30 community organizations in Pierce County.
Many community partners were among the nearly 100 people who attended a grand opening celebration at the new location on Feb. 19, 2025, including Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards, and nonprofits including Parks Tacoma, Tacoma-Pierce County Affordable Housing Consortium, Raising Girls, Rebuilding Together South Sound and United Way of Pierce County.

Dona Ponepinto, CEO of United Way of Pierce County, talked about the importance of her organization's partnership with BECU.
"We have a goal of lifting 15,000 households out of poverty by 2028 and moving them to financial stability," said Ponepinto, who spoke at the event. "A lot of work is around how to help families build wealth, and BECU has very much been a part of that work to support United Way's wealth initiatives across Pierce County."
Rebuilding Together South Sound, an organization working to increase affordable housing, has been a longtime partner of BECU. Since 2001, the organization has repaired more than 1,400 homes and reinvested over $10 million in the community.
"We are excited for BECU to have a bigger presence in Pierce County," said Amy Hoyte, executive director at Rebuilding Together South Sound. "As one of our strongest supporters over the last 18 years, BECU is a valued partner in preserving affordable housing in our community."
What's Next
Anderson sees the new location as a way to further contribute to the local community.
"Not only does this new location offer expanded financial services, but it also gives us the opportunity to continue the great work we do with our community partners," Anderson said. "They do incredible and critical work for the communities where we all live, we all work, and we all play. We are proud to grow here in Pierce County and look forward to continuing to do that same work."
